Dr. Supraja Anand is an Associate Professor at University of South Florida in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the director of SMS lab. Dr. Anand’s research interests include evaluation of effects of aging on speech production, effects of task complexity on acoustic characteristics of speech in individuals with Parkinson disease (PD), and speech staging in individuals with PD. Dr. Anand joined USF in August 2016 and teaches SPA 6211 - Advanced Vocal Disorders at the graduate level as well as SPA 4250 - Introduction to Speech Disorders and SPA 4901 - Research Methods in CSD at the undergraduate level.

Doctoral Students

Mary Pyfrom, MA, CCC-SLP, MT-BC

Mary is interested in examining the bi-directional relationship between cognition and voice production. Her broader research questions are (1) How can we use cognitive domains to improve voice outcomes in clinical practice and (2) How can voice production be used to monitor cognitive changes in older adults or in people with neurodegenerative diseases. She has been a practicing Speech Language Pathologist for over 13 years and is a board-certified Music Therapist.

Maitreyee Kulkarni

Maitreyee is a first year doctoral student in the lab. Her undergraduate and masters education are from Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune, India. She is trained in Hindustani classical music and is interested in the area of voice and its in disorders, specifically in people with neurodegenerative diseases as well as professional voice users.

Undergraduate Students

Janae Gipson

Janae is a senior undergraduate student studying Communication Sciences and Disorders. She is excited to get involved in research and clinical experiences, and is looking forward to expanding her knowledge on speech pathology and research in general. She hopes to pursue a career in speech pathology in the future.

Fun Fact - She enjoys spending time with family and friends and working with the kids and families at her church as a nursery teacher!

Wejdan Hajali

Wejdan is an undergraduate student majoring in Biomedical Sciences. She is excited to begin research in the speech and motors lab and develop her understanding of communication disorders. Wejdan plans to pursue a career in dental medicine in the future and hopes to use knowledge gained through research to better assist her patients.

Fun Fact - She enjoys embroidery, traveling, and spending time with her friends and family.

Alanna Hause

Alanna is an undergraduate student studying Speech Pathology and majoring in Language-Speech-Hearing Sciences. She is excited to participate in research and clinical studies, and wants to expand her knowledge on speech pathology and communicative research. She would love to pursue a career in medical speech pathology.

Fun Fact - She enjoys the beach, crocheting, and spending time with friends and family.

Nuzat Indawala

Nuzat is a Judy Genshaft Honors Undergraduate Student studying Language, Speech, Hearing Sciences and minoring in Children's Behavioral Healthcare. She is interested in engaging in research in the speech and motors lab. She hopes to gain experience in the speech pathology field through participating in behavioral experiments.

Fun Fact - When she is not studying and mentoring, she enjoys going to theme parks and roller skating.

Christopher Strome

Christopher is an undergraduate student studying Communication Sciences and Disorders. He is interested in the application of research and is excited to gain more familiarity in the field. He is planning to pursue a career as a pediatric SLP, and is hoping to use knowledge gained through research to better understand language.

Fun Fact - He likes to skateboard, sew, and play video games.

Zaynaa Syed

Zaynaa is a second year undergraduate student majoring in Biomedical Sciences minoring in Behavioral Health. She is looking forward to getting involved in the speech motor lab and learn more about speech pathology and the field of communication disorders. She aspires to pursue a career in medicine in the future.

Fun Fact - She enjoys going rock climbing and spending time with her friends!

Nicole Szuba

Nicole is a sophomore undergraduate student with a major is Language-Speech-Hearing Sciences, and a minor in Applied Behavior Analysis. She is looking forward to developing knowledge and experience through the speech and motors research lab. She is planning to pursue her career in Speech and Language Pathology in the future.

Fun Fact - She enjoys going to the gym and spending time with friends and family.
